This is the problem with believing fake news. It is the fake news that has told you what his motive for the explanation was. For all we know he could be saying it was a “political” mistake because the Left would use it to attack him. Just like they did.
He had no political choice other than to explain what happened. GEOTUS taught him you have to control the narrative or it will destroy you. Now, he could have said something more combative but that would have just made the fake narrative blow up more. It was bad political optics, which are meaningless, and nothing more.
