What? The DOE is authorizing ERCOT to generate above environmental quality limits to produce emergency power on 2/14-2/19. It didn’t matter, there still wasn’t enough gen. Read the fucking document.
There was an executive order of Obama's that Trump overrode with another or repealed. Biden re enacted it and also gave China access to our power grid again!
Basically, If Texas ramps up power BEFORE buying from outside states, more green power, the power people are committing FELONIES. The power from outside states is up to 10,000 percent!! And it takes up to a WEEK to ramp up power
They are trying to kill us, wake up!!!!
It authorized them, then immediately hamstrung them by forcing them to set arbitrary hours for extra generation. This isn't like summer where you know temps will drop after sunset, it was cold all day here. They then had to request extra power on an individual basis for every instance not inside those hours, basically asking for more power after a blackout.
They really didn't authorize it, they authorize it under very limited conditions that made it practically impossible. Basically, Ercot has to import power at whatever price the sellers want, and wasn't allowed to increase power production beyond environmental limits unless the power grid was already failing.
Which it was. Neighboring ISO (SPP) still massive discount to ERCOT prices. I am in the wholesale power business and understand this shit way better than anyone else here, trust me. This is nothing.
I believe you are in the industry and probably know a lot better than I do, but this situation really doesn't make sense to me. The limitations of needing to declare emergencies (which I do not know the specifics of but I'm sure it isn't just a The-Office-esque "I DECLARE EMERGENCY" being yelled out the window), having to buy outside power, and having to radically overcharge for over generation had no real effect? I don't understand why, if they wanted full power generation to be available to save lives, they wouldn't just say "for these 5 days lets not worry about a few tenths of a percent extra emissions on the year, go ahead and run full bore right out the gate." Why instead did the whole order read like it was 100% about telling them how and when they cannot run over the enviro regs? I guess it is plausible that even had they said "go ahead and run full bore" it still would have ended up this way, but when it does end up this way hindsight certainly puts into perspective that they care more about insignificantly increased gas emissions than they do about immediate threats to people's lives. I mean, the order literally says "if you end up having to deliver power over your enviro quotas, you have to charge people $1500/mwh." I mean, you're in a situation where people can't heat their homes and the federal government is arbitrarily price gouging to curtail usage? WTF is that about?
If I were in charge and the weather report warned of a 30 year storm I would have a plan in place to ramp up generation and buy from elsewhere. It would have been that easy. It seems like maybe you don't yet accept that we are living in a dictatorship. The sooner we accept that the sooner we will see things how they really are.
DOE is authorizing ERCOT to generate above environmental quality
So what. The damage is already done and the message already clearly sent. DOE allowing this is them telling you, "so you want to play along now or not" as they drizzle you some sugar from the honeypot.

That is not clear at all from the link. Csn you back up those statements?
I’m having a hard time blaming the DOE based on the provided document though honestly.
Ok Spaceforce1999 what do I know having worked in wholesale power markets my entire career, I’ll just trust your opinion.

So this is ERCOT not understanding that, or not giving a shit and saying "fuck it"?
There wasn’t enough power dude. Like short by 30gw. Environmental shit didn’t matter. They would have burned the family pets if they could have.

The gen wasn’t there. The regulations didn’t matter. A massive amount of gas gen couldn’t run because the gas supply simply was not there.
