I dimly recall that being done in the past, but it wasn't just "cruise the diesel up and plug it in", they had to purposefully derail them, and drive them trackless to a destination, and then wire them into the grid. I also recall it being discussed in CA during the Grey Davis years, but it was rejected as too expensive and there was no suitable place to park them and run them.

I'd rather they keep the engines running hauling supplies into the areas that need it.

Big generators are pretty common. The only problem is they're very local, they can only supply so much power. You'd need hundreds of the big boys to even put a dent into a medium sized city and suburbs.
