I'm not currently in AZ but I lived there most of my life. Short answer: we were played. He's a Mormon. He played the conservative card so well. He did just enough that it was believable. Taking a wild guess here: possibly Flake decided earlier on that being anti-Trump was the best side to take in order to boost his career. Obviously he guessed wrong. But now, the only way Flake can get on the right side is to ADMIT he was wrong, and he can't bring himself to do that. His only other choice is to keep pushing the anti-Trump-ness. He picked a rail, now he's stuck on it.
