Actually, I'm looking at this from another perspective: I think this is a heartwarming story about how much this man loved his wife and her daughter enough to treat her as his own.
This man clearly was not blind and he chose to keep them both in his life instead of possibly causing yet another black child to be raised in a single-parent home.
The wife...it would have been better for her if she confessed to her husband sooner before he died. She deserved neither the daughter nor the husband. Confessing to the daughter is taking the cowardly-wide-road-most-travelled, because there is no doubt the girl had her suspicions all her life.
Now, she better confess to God and ask for forgiveness.
