This is an ego thing.

He's DEEPLY resentful of Trump, because Trump was able to do what he couldn't. Become President.

Romney hates Trump because Romney thinks Trump is lower than he is. Trump never 'did the work' to get to the top. He never made a career out of politics. He never gave up his morals and principals or married into a wealthy family or spent years fucking over a state as Governor.

Romney also hates Trump because the people love Trump but reject Romney. And the people rejected Romney in a BIG way. 'How could the people put their trust in Trump? Some reality TV star that doesn't know anything about politics? The audacity! How dare they not choose me!' I'd imagine that Romney is also deeply resentful to the people that didn't choose him. I get the feeling he had eyes on being the RNC candidate in 2016. But Trump was chosen.

Romney sees himself as Trump's better. And how dare some commoner have aspirations to rise to the top and actually achieve it. How dare he refuse to become corrupted by the swamp and enrich themselves and their cronies at the cost of American lives? How dare he actually do what he was elected to do: Help Americans. How dare the people choose someone like Trump over Romney.

That's why Romney hates Trump. And it's a deep seeded hatred fueled by ego, embarrassment, and shame. It's an all consuming kind of hate. And he lets it run unchecked. Because Romney isn't a voice for the people of Utah. He's a voice for himself. He sees politics as a job and he's on the board of executives.
