Excellent essay. The "Fall from Grace" of the world's (formerly) greatest county is both shameful and totally disheartening. Reminds one of the fall of the Roman Empire. How to save DC?
DC pede here. His photos are from the downtown/federal building area. It's somewhat better in the heavily residential neighborhoods slightly further away...but not much. A few restaurants are open (indoor eating is allowed, at a fraction of full capacity), but the majority of the places I used to frequent are gone permanently.
DC can't be saved in terms of returning to its former liveability and vibrancy. And it shouldn't be. It was created as, and remains a FEDERAL DISTRICT, under the direct control of CONGRESS. Home Rule -- and with it the "Mayor" and the City Council can wiped away with the stroke of a pen.
It needs to be fully re-Federalized. My belief is that Trump was / will bring this about. Bite-Me and Kamel-Toe are Pres and Vice Pres of NOTHING ...
