Maybe, but it works. It’s odd nonetheless

But isn’t that really strange? It’s so specific in meaning.

Seriously, you want a plausible explanation?

Here's one.

The Romans didn't have a word for Quarantine, but the Jews did. So the closest translation the Romans had was describing the Jews' definition of it.

Wasn't going to comment on this threat (premise seems pretty nutty) but ...

I saw anti-Semites get angry that holocaust was a general word for genocide but got associated with the Jewish Holocaust of World War 2.

Turns out "holocaust" actually stems from a jewish word for a burned sacrificial offering. Using it for other cultures came later, following its use for the WW2 event.

There is no threat in posting this! It’s an interesting thing to happen. I highly doubt the Jewish people invented every word. C’mon man! Holocaust comes from Greek holo meaning whole and kaust meaning burned, as in caustic acid. Not everything is anti Semitic jeez.

It is actually a Greek word but the rest is right

Yes it is a completely Greek word, but, according to Brittanica, “ The word Holocaust is derived from the Greek holokauston, a translation of the Hebrew word ʿolah, meaning a burnt sacrifice offered whole to God.” So having a part of Two words in Greek that happen to match a Hebrew word makes it Hebrew origin? Makes no sense. That’s like saying the work heartbreak comes from the word artaber meaning cut away from in some other language.

Nah, Britannica fucked it up

Holocaust comes from more or less "ola kautos" meaning "fully burnt"

I didn't know that.
