This is true. At some point it was the Democratic-Republican party. Due to the whole slave issue, they split apart over the spawn of a decade I do believe. Republicans were seen at the time as the rich elites who didn't understand how the plantations needed slaves to grow things to feed and clothe America.

That’s not how it worked. The Democrat-Republican party became the Democratic Party with Andrew Jackson, long before the Republican Party was formed. The Republican Party was never affiliated with the Democratic-Republican party.

For a while, the main party that competed against the Democratic Party was the Whig Party. They were not really strong on the main issues of the day like slavery. So the Republican Party was formed and grew extremely fast in the anti-slavery northern states.
