I met my wife doing volunteer work in college. We've been together 20+ years and we still make-out daily. I'm not handsome, but I've never had a problem getting girls. Here is some advice:

Improve yourself and things will start falling in line
STOP giving a FUCK about want anyone and everyone thinks.
When you do something, strive to be the best
Learn AND practice man skills: work on cars, shoot guns, lift weights, excel at MMA skills, be able to fix stuff...electronics, appliances, plumbing, etc; learn to weld and do metalworking, carpentry
When you walk into a room: stand tall, have confidence.....and be able to back it up. Speak with authority, don't take shit from anyone, but don't be a dick
Learn something women like and be good at it. I learned to dance country, swing, and ballroom. My mom's best advice to me was "be a good dancer and you'll never have a problem getting a date".
Volunteer and go to places that potentially have women with values and interests you desire. I met my wife while volunteering at a math and science contest.
If a woman isn't interested in what you have to offer, don't give her a second thought. Don't waste your time with anyone who doesn't value you or your time.
