The GOP has had to be saved from itself in the past as well. Reagan took a lot longer than Trump to get to the top, but he got there. If only there wasn't 6 states of fraud, Trump would have all the wind at his back inside the party. Instead, he only has his supporters right now. There was significantly less media at the time, but they all loathed Reagan almost as much, but not quite, as much as Trump. Liberals basically are still, over 30 years later, rewriting history to make Reagan look bad, that's how much they hated him.
