Me too! thank god everyone was OK. So creepy to have that happen and that most of the material "stayed" instead of expanding out/into the passenger area.
Technically, engines always on fire. There is a controlled flame within the combustion chamber/can that will ignite the fuel air mixture passing around the can. Normally, this ignited gas is sent through tubes to the Turbine, which is connector to the compressor section and inlet fan (front of engine) to bring more air in as power increases. Looking at the engine and the images from Pratt and Whitney of what it looks like fully assembled, but before install, the tubes for the gases to go through were forced off, or they are finding ways out of the combustion area.
Holy shit, it's on fire but it's still turning! Good thing they really only need one engine to fly.
Whats spooky is that I've taken that flight # in the past, it's a regular route. Thank god they weren't farther in on their route to Hawaii
I think the shear force of wind 'in flight' kept the blades turning...
The engine was shaking so much I am really surprised it didn't separate from the wing.
I'm just thankful the plane, and the occupants, were able to land safely!

Thank you for the engineering lesson! Very interesting,.
You're most welcome.
The only issue is, jet engines are always on fire....
True...but usually in tact without pieces/parts scattering across the country side
But. But, was everyone wearing a mask. For safety.
