Alas the Fifties did this. There was a need to calm down, and de-arm, and de-fang the millions of armed returning veterans.

So the nice, kind, man with only two children, and a wife who was so sweet she made your teeth hurt, came in. For twenty years.

Then The Sixties happened, as a reaction to that, but instead of going back to the sensible, normal, rugged Forties, things got even softer and weirder. Men wore long hair, necklaces, earrings, and women had fewer and fewer children. The women ceased to be ladies. That was billed as an advance for them. Less stiff. Less respected and protected, and required to survive on their own in a promiscuous forest, however. But their clothes became more comfortable and washable and didn't need ironing.

So that's your answer.

The Fifties weren't all bad. But the clothes, food, and nascent focus on sluttiness were bad.

Fifties advertising is so full of soft porn, it makes your eyes fall out. The Sixties' craziness really started right after WW II.

You can't literally go back, but you can rescue and re-tool what was good. Clothes can be lady-like and also comfortable.
