To witness God's only son as the whipping post of those that espoused the mosaic law, so that when it happens again, you understand that you're not only going to be carrying that cross for your self worth and salvation, but you're going to fight like a motherfucker from it ever happening again.
It's what roman's used to crucify people. They made him carry it through town as a means of punishment. Much like your mom making you go get the switch, belt, or wooden spoon she gonna whip you with. a walk of shame if you will.
It was the jews that ratted jesus out. They were upset he was rocking the status quo of their money system and religious hierarchy. Jesus was basically saying God is within all of us and you don't need to tithe at the temples for God to hear your prayers. and that he was the King of the Jews. Which the jews deemed blasphemous. So the Jews told the Roman Governor that Jesus was a rebel towards the Roman Empire.
The romans were literally just the occupying authority. They didn't give a shit about Abrahamic Religions at that point in time. They only cared about social appeasement, assimilation, and tax collection. The jews accused Jesus of crimes. The romans were the court of law that carried out the sentence based on false accusations. in a nutshell.
You miss a significant point, however. There had already been quite a few fellows showing up to declare themselves the Messiah; and almost invariably, they'd led militant groups.
The Romans were having no more of this violent insurgency stuff, so the Sanhedrin decided that anyone claiming to be the Messiah would be handed over.
It's a prime example of what happens when you let political expediency override your faith.
I hadn't considered the previous false messiah's, very good point as to Rome's reaction. I had the impression Pontius didn't really see the crime as death worthy because he gave Jesus chances to "rescind" his claims thus removing the death penalty. Plus Jesus kind of ticked off the Pontius during their previous meetings which lead to his ultimate decision at the Sanhedrin Trial. It's been awhile and my memory isn't great as it once was.
I thought this musical summed the trial up well and the Actor for Pontius was really good.
It was one of his disciples that turned him over to the authorities. You are getting too wrapped around who did what and fail to realize that you would have crucified him too, just like me.
“Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.”
Luke 22:3-6 ESV
“Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.”
Matthew 26:3-4 ESV
Luke 22:66 is his trial before the Jewish Councel (not Roman)
Luke 23:13 is where pilate and Herod find Jesus innocent of the Jewish Councels claim. (They try to tell the romana that Jesus is claiming to be a king. They’re made he is claiming to be the son of god)
Luke 23:18 is when they as Pilates to free a killer and crucify Jesus in his place.
In the end it was the Jews who killed him for breaking mosaic law and claiming to be the Son of Man/Son of God.
Among other things, the life of Jesus parallels the life of the lambs used in the annual Passover slaughter. (Events and dates line up) The gospels are a layering of multiple analogies and prophetic answers rolled up together. I.e Son of Man from the book of Daniel combined with some older prop hues about the bloodline of David and photo baskets from Malachi.
When Jesus was sentenced to be crucified, he was forced to carry his cross from Jerusalem publicly through the streets to the spot he was to be crucified. Many interpret the carrying of the cross as carrying your burden or duty, whatever it may be.

What was the cross for then?

You must not have read the Bible then.

You love to project your own weakness onto other people. It doesn't make it true.

That's about all I know. Still reading the bible.
The cross is a reminder that you challenge enemies of the state without fear.
Jesus didnt die as a political statement.
Yes he did.
