Maoism (communism for farmers) was big in Kansas in the late 1800s. Kansas had two large communist daily newspapers with a combined circulation of 400.000 -- and that was before soviet subversion in the US. McCarthy was not paranoid or unjust; he saw what had happened in the Weimar republic and didn't want any of that in America.
I would argue that as soon as the constitution was ratified that leftist style thinking has been trying to foil the system. We have been fighting them a long time!

But radical feminism and spiritualism (ie the undermining of traditional social and religious norms) really began here. Communism around as part of that melange of half-baked “we know better than god and our ancestors” shit.
