Except automation means a smaller tax base but try explaining that to those demanding their $15 an hour.

No. Look at what happened with cigarette taxes - taxes went up which increased prices and so consumption and revenue went down. See also gasoline taxes. By artificially increasing prices, that will suppress consumption. There will be lower employment and there by reducing payroll taxes collected by the state.
