Yes, that's right, you start with communism and take it even further into groupthink and the group-first mentality, pretending that somehow Nationalism forgives the destruction of individual rights and freedoms. Choosing an in-group, and making it you defining feature is the same as communism, that you describe your in-group with a flag is irrelevant.

Fascism is not a natural outgrowth of Nationalism, but it as a natural one from communism.

I think as people mature and they start seeing the flaws in Democratic Republics they are more open to Fascism. You are 100% correct in the idea that the family, not the individual should be the primary unit in society. It also helps if the society in question has a common culture, religion, ethnic makeup and history. Look at Japan for an example of a society that would excel under a fascist government. It will never work in America and to make it work would be very bloody.
