Trying to tell this to Reddit right now. Working as well as you'd expect. I would have just cranked up the juice and paid the fine later, unless DOE + EPA have the key to do such a thing.

People are also saying "Texas wasn't connected to power grids outside the state." Turns out yes they were. To the east and to Mexico.

Amazing how the news just gets something so wrong at first.

Texas is connected to both US grids and also Mexico. No one had power to see. Same reasons partially. EPA daily emission restrictions.

The connections were at max capacity.

Classic Texas:

About 2:10 into an ERCOT video about its history, ERCOT explained that Texas has an independent grid because of its response to the 1935 Federal Power Act. The law gave the federal government authority to regulate power companies that engaged in interstate commerce. So Texas power companies agreed not to sell power outside of Texas, which allowed them the ability to avoid federal regulation.

Heh or cynical. They want to entangle Texas so it would be harder to leave the union.

I think people confuse it with the fact that Texas can totally isolate themselves if they need to from the other grids. At least that is what I recall about their system. Something about specific interlinks they can disable at will.
