I thought this was the first massively contested presidential election in history, but turns out there was one in the 1870s. Seems like even on this site we forget of U.S. history.

The election of 1876 was a clusterfuck. Unsurprisingly, the Dems were threatening violence if their candidate wasn’t installed. What’s really bad is that the GOP gave too many concessions to Dems, which allowed the Dems control of the south for the next 80 years
