I thought this was the first massively contested presidential election in history, but turns out there was one in the 1870s. Seems like even on this site we forget of U.S. history.

Today, I was thinking the Republican Party was started to abolish slavery. What was its purpose after it accomplished that? There's been a few leaders that had ideas, TR, Coolidge, Nixon, Reagan, and Trump are the personalities that come to mind, but the rest of the lot?
