Let’s face it, the optics of “taking Ice hockey away from Harlem boys using the rink for free” was a loser on its face...so they’ll move on to the next one, and then the next one, and then the next one until they can bankrupt Trump and his children. And his children’s children’s children.
Read "The Art of the Deal" he describes the initial agreement - basically the Trump organization rebuilt the Wollman rink and ran it - Trump basically paid for it for a deal to run them - which they do well, with all the proceeds going to operate, maintain and improve the rink.
The rinks were supposed to be boondoggles that the mayor could throw money to his corrupt buddies, but they did such a bad job that passing it off to Trump was the only way of saving face.
