Seriously, we are headed for very hard times, your physical fitness will give you the best chance of survival. I'm not in nearly as good of shape as I was a couple years ago but I decided a few weeks ago I have to push myself as hard as I can so now I do my exercise until I'm sore, then rest and as soon as I feel recovered I'm right back out there again. I'm getting all kinds of minor injuries but that's a good thing because I want to get injured now and recover so that when shit really starts hitting the fan I'll be in as good of shape as possible.

Stronglifts 5x5, Starting strength, give these a look and pick one. Start light to get your form down, that is the #1 most important step for proper development and avoiding injuries. From there, aim for the good ole 2/3/4, as in 2 plate bench, 3 plate squat, 4 plate dead. This is achievable within 1 year for most novice lifters who follow a good routine. After that, 3/4/5. Somewhere in there you should get your diet in check. You can pack on lots of pounds and they will help you lift more, but God help you if you've got a power gut and end up needing to run anywhere so I advise against dirty cheeseburger gains. Manly men don't use straps or gloves. Chalk is great.
