Originally, the United States was organized something like this:

God -> People -> States -> Federal Government

Meaning, God gave people commandments. People try to fulfill those commandments and in so doing form state governments. In order to more fully fulfill their role, the states organized into a federal government.

This chart also explains how people watched over government. It wasn't really the business of the people to involve themselves in federal matters -- they were supposed to focus on their states.

Over time, this "org chart" has been bastardized. Some people running the states got it into their heads that they can somehow boss the people around. The states could determine what are and are not rights. However, the Federal Government was seen as some sort of confounding power that the states had no direct control over.

God -> States -> People -> Federal Government

After the Civil War, Republicans tried to change it to:

God -> People -> Federal Government -> States

The principle behind their change was that since states were abusing the rights of the people, the federal government stepped in and had to take corrective actions.

As the 20th century started to roll along, some people really didn't like having God in the equation, so they started thinking like this:

People -> Federal Government -> States

But this caused all sorts of problems, as who was going to take care of the poor and the widowed and the elderly? So they tried to do this:

People -> Federal Government and States -> People

With the Deep State, we know live in this sort of environment:

Federal Government -> States -> People

And now that they are trying to literally redefine nature:

Federal Government -> gods -> People

We're rapidly heading to this final destination:

Federal Government -> States -> People -> gods
