The party struggled to shake off the national front (extreme-right) party tag, for decades - they are far from left, and have strong conviction!

This is correct. They are conservative in a very European way--basically if you want to live in France you better adopt their culture. They are actually very nice when you learn their language and do as they do. But when it comes to economic policy they diverge from American conservatism.

France is strongly rejecting American "woke" thinking, even Macron.
