The oath is not just words. It is a renunciation of former allegiance to any crown or entity and the acceptance of the American citizenship and all it's duties and privileges.

That is why birth right citizenship makes no sense. Someone who was not born of a citizen cannot renounce that allegiance at birth and thus they are granted something for nothing.

It's just for show nowadays. It meant something decades ago. We were told as much during my naturalization ceremony.
