I have long been of the opinion that in his case it's a symptom of childhood abuse. That in NO way is an excuse or defense for his actions. But it would explain a lot.
I don't agree. I think it's a result of never living up to his father's accomplishments combined with his father's lack of proper parenting. I would even suggest perhaps Joe was a little overly controlling and talked down to Hunter a lot. Joe likely didn't foster a very good mentor-like relationship with Hunter.
After a while of never really living up to his father's accomplishments and expectations he just sort of gave up as a person. He can do fuck all and it doesn't matter. He has no purpose in life so he just turns to porn, drugs and sex.
I also have a feeling no woman has ever loved him for him and always his power/influence which is based entirely off his dad. He probably learned this lesson the hard way like most guys and hasn't been able to recover from it.
He honestly never needed to be abused for him to turn out this way.
