It's a virus that's pretty contagious, most people get over it quickly, but some people get much worse symptoms, especially the elderly.
Lockdowns and masks would have never worked. Any policy that requires 100% compliance to work is guaranteed to fail.
So, because it's contagious and typically mild, it's going to continue to spread and it'll become just another thing you can get sick with. The vaccines can help but it's going to be like the flu shot, just something you do if you're at risk or around those who are at risk.
