That said our state has always had machines. NO paper record. The old machines required you to pull a lever to close the curtain and record the vote. They were mechanical.

We use walk-in electronic machines now that still have a curtain.

Much has made about blockchain being the way votes are cast in the future. The same folks are worried about EMP's.

Paper ballots, voter Identification, signature verification, retained for at least 2 years and a strict chain of custody would go a LONG way to fix the problems with this country.
