whats with all these ribbons and badges on his jacket. he gives the aura of someone who would be the first to hide under a desk when any sort of conflict occurs

You get ribbons and medals for doing literally absolutely nothing sometimes.

In the army you get a ribbon for throwing a grenade at a mandatory combat school. And its a requirement for everyone that joins. There is no getting around it, you have to do it, and its not a big deal. 'Splodin baseball not that scary. Participation trophy ribbon. Same thing for national defense ribbon. Same thing if you stay in long enough, same thing if you don't get in trouble over a certain time period.

People can be in the military for 20 years and do literally nothing and end up with a chest full of ribbons.
