Stockers and receivers are the backbone of any retail business. Costco makes it a lot easier because it's mostly pallets. They can afford to do it while not cutting the workforce. They're helping pressure raises where competitors can be crushed.
That Costco in China is doing ridiculously well too. I think they still sell out every day.
What this likely means is that it's going to go to almost all self checkout lanes and instead of 1 person, there will be 2 people at the door.

Just as an FYI
Whole Foods founder paid good wages, gave stock incentives, training programs, ran an excellent business.
Now that Amazon owns it wages are stagnant and stock incentives no more.
