Gold is deflationary, which is actually worse that inflationary currency as it causes hoarding and currency illiquidity. The trope of the Scrooge McDuckian vault came from the millionaire railroad tycoons literally hoarding greenbacks, causing a currency shortage, and basically held the US government hostage by refusing to put them in a bank (and thus back in circulation). Like it or not, inflationary currencies have their problems but they are MUCH better than the alternatives, especially if you have good trade policies. The biggest issue for us isn't inflation, it's that wages haven't risen with inflation because free trade and immigration.
