He's from a minority, the Alawites, and created a coalition with other minorities (Christians, Yazidis) and they are all being attacked since 2011 by the Muslim brotherhood that was propped up in the Arab spring by the Obama administration + the UK, Israel and the Saudis. He's defended all these Yazidis, Christians and others against ISIS that sometimes succeeded in chopping their heads off. Biden just confirmed with those strikes that he still supports ISIS.

He then made these multiple positions life terms, making it impossible to remove him through legal means. They supposedly have a "republic," but he declared it was and every fulcrum of justice in the whole country now answers to him directly. While the country has had a pretty dark past with some minority populations, he has expanded it to full blown genocide of multiple groups. More worryingly, he's now actively fomenting hostilities with his neighbors in a clear sign of wars of aggression soon to come.
