The comparison to me is not about drawing a parallel between the Nazi party/German people and the Democrats/American people. It's about American people standing by and watching (encouraging) the political persecution of their friends, neighbors, etc., much as the German people and other Europeans watched in the Nazis rise to power.
I guess I don't read into this as much as others.
