I thought Europe ran on windmills and solar panels. Why do they need oil?

13
ravioli_king [S] 13 points ago +13 / -0

idk but Russia is putting a pipeline through the Baltic.

Europe buys massive amounts of fossil fuel power whenever their green power fails, which is why power is so much more expensive per mWh for European countries.

But hey, at least they can pat themselves on the back while smelling their own farts because they're so green.

1
Halcyoncritter 1 point ago +1 / -0

you think they would use their own farts over derp-ass green energy but no

That'a why the US was in Syria. When President Trump said "we got the oil" what he meant was that neither Iran nor Turkey were getting the pipelines they were fighting for.

There's a whole new pipeline that middle eastern conflicts are coalescing on -- the one from Israel's waters through Cyprus then into Greece/EU. Europe and the US want this pipeline and I believe the Arab state's normalization of ties with Israel are mostly due to them wanting to get in on it as well or risk losing market share.

Turkey wants to block it because they'd be the big losers (Turkey was suppose to the hub for the pipelines, not their mortal enemy Greece) and is why they've been agitating in Libya, Syria and Armenia.

The US/western switched their focus in Syria to limiting Iranian and Turkish expansionism with the pipeline projects scrapped... DC doesn't even try to pretend like they're there to fight terrorists anymore. Just a good 'ole unconstitutional, undeclared war no one talks about in the news.

"Let's fight a war for Iranian oil." (sips tea, pinky out)

"Capital idea, old boy! They have been such reliable friends in the past!" (adjusts monocle)

Oooh, so that's why Aleppo was fucked

Under-rated perspective.

Germany wasn't a big problem until they wanted to get fuel from the Middle East in the early 1900's - specifically, the Germany-Bulgaria-Serbia-Turkey-Iraq railroad they wanted to have built. They backed a ploy to knock out Serbian leadership to allow their oil train to get built and that kicked off the mutually assured destruction of WWI.

Britain conveniently figured out a way to get gas out of the Ottoman Empire tax free - by removing the Ottoman Empire.

I know it is not always all about oil (i.e. like U.S. "wars" that are simply military contract and foreign aid graft operations by elites); but raw resources are a big deal.

"The migrant crisis" and "terrorism" is the goal. I suppose that works.

I personally think there are those who see raw mineral wealth and trade route control as worthy of war; there are others who are highly trained to make literally insane decisions that cause chaos for "little people" but, because of their emotional impact amongst their insulated peer group, actually bring wealth, status, and power to those same decision makers. Perverse incentives intrinsic to every complex human system.

I am increasingly convinced that intentional destruction of networked computers; of microchip manufacturing plants; will destroy the insulation this crop of elite decision makers enjoy. They will be among the rest of us again, despite their titular power and wealth.

More ... openly despotic, brutal, and parochial elites will take their place and will likely be embraced by the populations they rule over. Parochial despots, after all, do have direct interest in the lives and fortunes of those they govern; unlike the internet- and electric-grid dependent crop we have now.

FAQ-REDDIT 1 point ago +1 / -0

Where is the Keystone Pipeline? Oh that is cancelled.

Guess we need to US citizens over to the middle East to build up the ASIA and EUROPE energy infrastructure.

Like Kuwait, we have to back and save them from themselves again and again...

1
ravioli_king [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Technically Keystone XL is canceled. Keystone is done. Weird to call them the same name but with an XL. I would have called it something different.

Maybe we want to defend our "investment" in Syria since we own it? idk. I'm just throwing out ideas.

acasper -1 points ago +1 / -2

One of many reasons the American Empire has an interest in Syria. It also serves as a bulwark against further expansion of Islamic nations into areas near Israel. We’re currently working on achieving a Monopoly win by buying up all the sand-beige properties.

1
Harambe 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yeah thats why we are bombing it. Everyone knows you bomb your bulwarks

1
acasper 1 point ago +1 / -0

bulwark n. A wall or embankment raised as a defensive fortification; a rampart. n. Something serving as a defense or safeguard. n. A breakwater.

A war zone can be used a bulwark. Bombing the shit out of a country can create a bulwark. That being said, probably not the most accurate word to use in this context.
