Here's a more realistic interpretation of both McConnell and Romney's recent softened stance towards Trump:

They know the fix is in, either the NY AG or US DOJ is going to charge Trump with a crime, probably sometime in 2022, complete with a made-for-TV perp walk and FBI raid. That's how they're going to get rid of Trump.

The charges won't stick (probably), but the damage will have been done.
