PhD these days mean jack shit. "Scientists" are nothing more these days but glorified extremely narrow-specializing techs, without an iota of understanding of either science or philosophy (and philosophy of science).
Thomas Kuhn may have predicted it although I'm pretty sure it was obvious to anyone interested in the subject. Hopefully, we are close enough to the next volution and will see some academic reforms in our lifetimes.
Really disappointing to people who look up to true scientists. Usually you can spot them because they say things like, "After thirty years, there's so much left to learn that I know I'll never get it."
I guess it's all really a matter of perspective and scale too: academia are many, true scientists are a few. What sucks is that the talentless bureaucrats -- bogons -- now ran academia and the advancement gets bogged down by the uncreative "researchers" who do nothing but "experiment" without a resemblance of trying to use their imagination to spruce up their approach, but that's not the worst they do -- they try to stagnate if not straight-up sabotage anyone else who's better.
And that's without even venturing into the whole SJW-ation of the research and theorization which plagues institutions with pseudo-science and, as I mentioned already, bogonity.
Absolutely. Whether because they can't be beat by someone without the credentials, or just to perpetuate the cycle of shit that is bringing in the funding, or for whatever stupid reason . . . this shit is rampant.

And on top of that, they've institutionalized research/idea/IP theft.
