Refunds aren't a measure of anyone's financial situation, other than to indicate that filers should change their withholding if their refunds are truly refunds of overpaid tax, and not refundable tax credits which are handouts.

I don't know about other people, but I'm single and I make a pretty good salary. I don't think I claimed any dependents for my W-2 so they take more out of my paycheck every two weeks. Then I get more back every year. I'm getting almost 2K back from my federal income tax and over 1K for my state. I also don't have any other tax forms to wait on other than my W-2 so I usually file a quick and simple tax form every year.
