And yet Japan's number of deaths from the flu in 2019 (in other words, pre-pandemic) was ~3.2k, while the US had ~34k deaths from the same season. Japan does have slightly over 1/3 of the US population, but even accounting for that (and not accounting for their MUCH higher population density) their flu death rate was way lower.

Japan is also a much healthier country though so it may not be that indicative of their masks. Even their over weight people are healthier than our non over weight people
