The Russians have a defense pact with Iran as do we (albeit more limited) with Saudi Arabia.
That's how a lot of this bullshit works and those above two facts were decided ultimately in or around the late 50s but really the day after WW2 when most of the leftover territories were divvied up between us and the Soviets.
