Yup. School used to be about teaching to the top 50% (including letting kids fail) and now it's about teaching to the bottom 50% (including letting the top kids remain unchallenged).
Worse, those unchallenged kids go on to face real challenges for the first time as an adult. They've been smart enough to coast; exams, finals, whatever crunch time stresses out other kids are "Sweet, just a test, no homework" time for them. Homework's just some busywork taking up their time. And if they skimp on that, test scores basically save them anyway, so ha.
Then they get a job as an adult that, while not that challenging, is high stress enough that they can't Smart through it. Tax season if they're accountants, deployment dates if they're programmers. Even just McDonalds and the lunch rush. Any real world job will have a learning curve or a deadline that can't just be vaulted over with excellence. If you've never actually had to exert effort until you're 20 or so, you're not gonna be able to cut it when you suddenly need to.

Smart people tend to have the ability to overcome when challenged, but I will agree that there are still long lasting effects. My son went to a decent public elementary school, but was assigned to a shitty middle school because of zoning. Fortunately a Hillsdale College affiliated charter school opened up with his current grade being the top grade they offer, but they’ll be adding grades every year so he’ll should be able to stay there until graduation. You raise the quality of teachers as defined by 1) the teachers' own academic credentials (i.e. college GPA) and 2) the teachers' performance in the class room as measured by their students' standardized test scores. You attract quality teachers by raising their salaries.
Teachers unions do not want to raise teachers salaries to attract quality teachers, instead they want to hire higher numbers of teachers (smaller class sizes!) and they don't want any sort of standardized testing used to evaluate teachers.
The school systems also spend egregious amounts of money on administrators. Washington DC public schools at one point had one administrative employee for every student in the system. 1:1 student to administrator ratio. You could fire 80% of those people without a hiccup and put that money into salaries for math, english, and science teachers in the worst schools.
If we doubled the salary for math and english in shithole schools and selected those teachers based on their own academic performance and the performance of their students on standardized tests, we could close the race gap in a few years.

Devoting resources to High kids takes resources away from getting Low kids to a passing level. Let's say a typical class is 100 kids. I'd rather have a chance at 1 Elon Musk, 19 kids who can innovate and program or operate at a very high level, 60 average citizens who can read and write and do math at a standard level and specialize for a typical job, and 20 illiterate failures who need to do sweatshop work the rest of their lives than 100 average functional citizens.

Just realized: what if conservatives started large scale private schools requiring all students to denounce racial equity theory? There are many schools already open during lockdown that are being ignored by media while the public school system has teachers yelling why they haven't gotten their shot yet and pouting about not opening until they do. I find this to be a golden opportunity to strike two birds with one stone, engage in traditional education while others sit back another year or two and prove that schools are more at risk of the seasonal flu than something we neither understand nor see frequently in children.

when i was in school i had a few good teachers, but it was not aobut thinking for yourself at all. If you didn't parrot whatever the teacher said in any class that is subjective(english, history, etc) then you did not get a good grade. to be fair most my teachers disliked me so it could have just been personal.

Yup. School used to be about teaching to the top 50% (including letting kids fail) and now it's about teaching to the bottom 50% (including letting the top kids remain unchallenged).
Worse, those unchallenged kids go on to face real challenges for the first time as an adult. They've been smart enough to coast; exams, finals, whatever crunch time stresses out other kids are "Sweet, just a test, no homework" time for them. Homework's just some busywork taking up their time. And if they skimp on that, test scores basically save them anyway, so ha.
Then they get a job as an adult that, while not that challenging, is high stress enough that they can't Smart through it. Tax season if they're accountants, deployment dates if they're programmers. Even just McDonalds and the lunch rush. Any real world job will have a learning curve or a deadline that can't just be vaulted over with excellence. If you've never actually had to exert effort until you're 20 or so, you're not gonna be able to cut it when you suddenly need to.
I experienced that exact scenario, but I disagree with that people won't be able to cut it. Smart people tend to have the ability to overcome when challenged, but I will agree that there are still long lasting effects. Although I'm very successful, I know I would have been even more successful if I had to work and learn those good habits when I was younger.

If you look beyond just the known stats and instead just look at the murder rate by area, I think you find that if you exclude all the black inner cities, you have the same murder rate as Europe, before the Muslim invasion anyway. My son went to a decent public elementary school, but was assigned to a shitty middle school because of zoning. Fortunately a Hillsdale College affiliated charter school opened up with his current grade being the top grade they offer, but they’ll be adding grades every year so he’ll should be able to stay there until graduation. Long-term, these pernicious ideas and policies will work their way into private and charter schools, too. We're already seeing some of them (radical pro-LGBTQ "tolerance" courses, LGBTQ clubs, and "anti-racism" courses full of BLM, Marxist and CRT propaganda) make their way in to even top-performing private schools. Unless there is hard pushback from the right half of society, private and charter schools will start feeling pressured to divert ALL resources from advanced courses to help the "underserved."

The test score race gap is a travesty and could be narrowed in a few years pretty easily. We know how to do it - there is no mystery.
You raise the quality of teachers as defined by 1) the teachers' own academic credentials (i.e. college GPA) and 2) the teachers' performance in the class room as measured by their students' standardized test scores. You attract quality teachers by raising their salaries.
Teachers unions do not want to raise teachers salaries to attract quality teachers, instead they want to hire higher numbers of teachers (smaller class sizes!) and they don't want any sort of standardized testing used to evaluate teachers.
The school systems also spend egregious amounts of money on administrators. Washington DC public schools at one point had one administrative employee for every student in the system. 1:1 student to administrator ratio. You could fire 80% of those people without a hiccup and put that money into salaries for math, english, and science teachers in the worst schools.
If we doubled the salary for math and english in shithole schools and selected those teachers based on their own academic performance and the performance of their students on standardized tests, we could close the race gap in a few years. Thee unions hurt poor black children in support of middle class white women.

School admin & teachers have their careers advanced partially based on students grades. That means, it's better to have a bored advanced kid get easy A's in basic classes, vs hard B's in classes that actually challenge them.
The whole system is orientated towards raising the bad and less intelligent kids to passing level, vs helping every child meet their potential (even if that potential is lower than average). Devoting resources to High kids takes resources away from getting Low kids to a passing level. This attitude is both systemic AND held by the majority of educators and admin, so virtually impossible to end.
Clown world. Teachers are generally not very smart, deticated to unions, urban and suburban mom's: The trifecta of breeding dumb, priveleged, useful idiots. Admin are proto-Dem politicians, so they exploit the dumb teachers to, yes, bring everyone down to the same level.

This has long been an issue with schools. They'll just use whatever rhetoric is en vogue to give a big fuck you to any student with real potential. No Child Left Behind was also used to basically gut anything for advanced students to instead focus putting all resources towards getting the retards across the finish line.
Let's say a typical class is 100 kids. I'd rather have a chance at 1 Elon Musk, 19 kids who can innovate and program or operate at a very high level, 60 average citizens who can read and write and do math at a standard level and specialize for a typical job, and 20 illiterate failures who need to do sweatshop work the rest of their lives than 100 average functional citizens.
You're not only wasting their potential in academics, you're setting the standard for how hard they can work; if they school is always easy and effortless for them because of their intelligence, how do you think they'll handle it when they do run into a real challenge? Seattle Public Schools started this AP phase out in Oct 2019. They will be completely gone by 2023. The good news is, elimination of these classes will not likely hurt a students chance of getting into a good college since they now seem to care more about how woe or SJW an applicant is, rather than grades.

Just realized: what if conservatives started large scale private schools requiring all students to denounce racial equity theory? There are many schools already open during lockdown that are being ignored by media while the public school system has teachers yelling why they haven't gotten their shot yet and pouting about not opening until they do. I find this to be a golden opportunity to strike two birds with one stone, engage in traditional education while others sit back another year or two and prove that schools are more at risk of the seasonal flu than something we neither understand nor see frequently in children.

This is why I think the future of education is actually online from organizations that have established a good reputation of delivering unbiased material. In the future the smartest people will simply be autodidacts that have developed a passion for learning and apply their newly found skills.
So everyone is accepted into everything now regardless of intelligence.
