Because then they'd have to admit they're wrong, and that means coming face to face with the horrible reality that everything they've believed in has been a complete sham, they've been suckered, and are wasting their time. Better to delude themselves and live a lie than face a truth that harsh. It's understandable in a way, but it's wholly irresponsible.
