It's really bad to let them survive. They'll almost always press charges and sue you. Dead faggots can't press charges or sue.
Further, from a tactical perspective, you NEVER stop firing until you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the threat is fully eliminated. Pretty much every self defense course teaches that you dump your entire mag into the target. You don't stop until you're out. If you're not out and they're on the ground you fucking shoot them while they're on the ground. You then reload, walk closer, and put a couple rounds through their head. You leave absolutely zero possibility that they are barely alive and could draw a handgun from their waist while dying and shoot you still. DON'T STOP SHOOTING.
There are so many sad stories of people who stop shooting and then the threat still pulls a handgun and kills or seriously injures the person defending themselves. Ask any self defense shooting instructor. YOU DON'T STOP SHOOTING. I can not stress that enough.
Their families can though, and they do.

No self defense course I know of teaches anything like this. The law enforcement academy I graduated from didn't teach anything like this. You shoot to end the threat, period. If you go ham reloading and pumping dozens of rounds into a guy laying on the ground the DA is going to have a field day. I'd love to know the self defense source you are getting this advice from.
