That's a big part of it, but another portion people miss is that the countries with socialized medicine fix the price of all medications (because they're paying for it) meaning that patients in the US have to make up difference by paying higher rates. I'm not saying that drug companies wouldn't charge us the higher rates either way, but it does take 10s of billions of dollars to create a single drug, and instead of spreading that cost burden over every first world country, it's bore mainly by us.
