I've found that any member of the armed forces that I actually respect, it has been for any number of reasons, but "they're in the military, I have to" has never been one of them. If they're worthy of respect it's because of their character and that wasn't something they received from the government. So I've never just blindly paid respect to someone because of a uniform and they only ever keep giving me fewer reason to start doing that.
