You see this even at the local level. A few years ago during the height of #metoo witch hunts, some of the most outspoken lefty business owners (typically of bars, restaurants, and art galleries) were all quickly and very publicly accused. A lot of these guys had a long rep of going through women and being big partiers, and thought to be low-key assholes. Typical smarmy liberal.
What was really interesting was that in most cases, their accusers were women that usually weeks earlier has applauded and shared their posts on social media, regularly attended events these men hosted, or had often dated these men for a time, and said that their breakups were totally mutual, just their lives were going in different directions.
At the time a lot of us sane people just said "The left always eat their own." And came a few benefit events for "victims of sexual assault" hosted by the some of the accusers and their "believe all women" simps.
I know I'm kinda rambling here, but I guess my point coincides with in yours in that these people are totally okay with this as long as they benefit in some way, until its more beneficial to call them out.
