Am familiar with Southern and South East Missouri. We never visited a relative during my childhood that didn't have a rack, and I mean a rack of 20 to 30 rifles of various calibers. Sometimes in the kitchen or back bedroom. Sometimes their family room (they didn't call it that back then) looked like the back wall of a regional sized Cabela's. I never met anyone down there that didn't own at least two Mausers. I grew up thinking that Mausers were the go to deer rifle for everybody. I only remember seeing lever action 30-30s in hardware stores. I really miss seeing guns in hardware stores.
