They are consolidating their hold over academia because its the gateway into the future leadership positions of the country. This is probably the most important issue since every other problem originates from here and I think recent efforts to ban Critical Theory from being "taught" are a great move.
The stupid move I see some quick to come to is to just say "well fuck universities! we shouldnt go!" which is the entire point of all of this, youre giving them exactly what they want.
It used to be that a degree from a top University guaranteed a certain level of competence. If you're looking to hire someone, and you're lazy, you could just hire people from top Universities and be guaranteed someone decent.
Now with affirmative action admissions, plus "legacy" students (children of alumni), there is no guarantee that a degree from a top University implies competence.
Over time, the universities are destroying their own brand by admitting unqualified people. There is a LOT of inertia, so it might take awhile to have an effect, if at all.
Affirmative action also means that minorities are generally the dumbest people in the room. A minority might be in the bottom 5% at a high ranked school, when without affirmative action they would be average in a lower ranked school. This causes the non-affirmative action people to get used to the fact that any minorities they deal with are underqualified.

Yeah, AA hurts minorites more than it helps. All the other bullshit it causes aside.
