It's a coping mechanism. The deepest reason many people enjoy wearing the masks right now is because they're coping with the stress of reality. It's no different than someone constantly biting their nails or pulling eyelashes. People have many ways of dealing with stress or anxiety and the whole "mask up" phenomenon is an extension of that. And then there's also the link between a person's political views and their ability to think rationally.
