The novel is based. The movie is communist garbage. Paul Verhoeven took a wonderfully introspective novel about the value of military service in a representative society and turned it into a satire about a fascist military complex.
The original novel wasn't about military service though, that was just one path to citizenship. The core idea of the novel is that only people with skin in the game should be running society, whether it be military or other civil service.
They could have done the drop suits, they decided not to. About the only thing the movie did well was the bugs. It's a fun movie but isn't really even close the book.
I would love to see a new movie that stays truer to the source, and name it Cap Troopers.
And did it so poorly that he didn't actually make their society fascist. The military leadership is held accountable for failures, the populace can (and does) freely criticize the military and government, and anti-military individuals who are opposed to people joining the military are fabulously rich.
But yeah, the book is WAY better. Fantastic read, would recommend 10/10
