7 year olds wouldn't say "I'm lonely." They'd say "I miss you." There's a way actual kids talk. They are not that in touch with their more complex feelings, and lonely is decently complex. Kids that age mostly know how to express emotions that will They would tend towards 'bored' instead of 'lonely' even if what they mean is lonely.

Either she's lying and is with her kid (good mom) or her kid honestly doesn't give a shit and is used to her being absent anyway.

Also, what 5 year old is writing journal entries? They are only just learning to write in kindergarten, so unless the "journal entry" is a crayon drawing of his brother in a separate room with frowny faces and maybe the word "sad", I'm not buying it.
